St Eval Church Pinnacles Appeal

The following letter was received by the Chairman from a Cornwall based member Chris Moncaster.

“Our Rector, the Reverend Graham Shield, has suggested that as the St Eval Parochial Church Council Gift Aid Officer I write to you about the St Eval Pinnacles Appeal. As you are aware, the pinnacles form a prominent feature of our church and add much to its external character. However, they are very exposed and the Atlantic storms have over the years taken their toll. About 10 years ago we started to monitor their condition, realising that at some stage they would need remedial work. With this in mind, we have been setting aside funds and this year we sought professional advice on their condition. The structural engineers reported that all 4 pinnacles are in need of being taken down and rebuilt around a stainless steel support rod. Indeed, 3 of the pinnacles have started to tilt and their repair needs to be completed as a matter of some urgency. We have since received, through the tender process, an estimate for the cost of the work at £50,000.

The St Eval Parochial Church Council has already raised a significant proportion of the anticipated cost through its Fabric Fund but in order to allow the work to proceed in June 2008 we are hoping to raise the balance through our Pinnacles Appeal.

St Eval Church has a long-standing relationship with the Royal Air Force and especially so with individual British, Commonwealth and Allied squadrons that operated at both Royal Air Force St Eval and St Mawgan. Not only has the church provided a place of worship for past and present St Mawgan personnel and their families housed at St Eval but it is also the spiritual home of the Royal Air Force Coastal Command and Maritime Air and the Royal Air Force St Eval Coastal Command Associations. Many of those personnel would have gone on to serve at Royal Air Force Kinloss within the Shackleton, Nimrod and Search and Rescue fleets. Our ties with the Service continue: the church is about to become the resting place for the 203 Squadron standard, and it provides the venue for Cornwall’s Royal Air Force Association annual service. We also maintain the Royal Air Force St Eval and Coastal Command books of remembrance for those air and ground crews killed in the
Second World War. Our visitors’ book is filled with the names of ex- and current servicemen and their families who have, over the years, had some connection with the church and have returned to pay their respect to old comrades.

We hope that either the Association of perhaps individual Association members might feel able to support our appeal for which we would be most grateful. Any donations should be sent to our Treasurer, Mrs Vera Martyn whose details are attached.”

As Chris rightly points out the relationship between the Parish Church and Maritime Air Forces is both close and very current. Within the ancient walls of the church are many precious items of Maritime History which are lovingly cared for by the Parishioners. On the many occasions when members of the Maritime Community have visited the Church or taken part in a service they have been warmly welcomed into the Community. I feel sure that members of the Association and indeed anyone who reads this and has a connection with Coastal Command or the modern Maritime Air Forces would wish to support the Church which many consider the Spiritual home of Maritime. Elsewhere on the web you will find a link to the St Eval Parish Church web, please have a and see for yourselves the wonders of this beautiful old Church.
