Forres Angling
Association, Annual General Meeting took place |
|
Mid August |
|
We are now into the second week of August and the river has been very low for the past few weeks.
The grilse run was late again this year with some very small fish; however, in the past week the size of grilse has improved with some good quality fish in the 5lbs mark.
There has been fish running with every tide, mostly at night. Summer Salmon are also running in spite of low water and it looks like rain is on the way which will not improve the fishing but spread the anglers out along the river system. It is good to report that a considerable amount of fish has been caught with approximately 70% returned. It is also good to see the visitor s coming back year after year and some new faces this year. The visitor s come from France, Germany and many other countries are are aware of the conservation of Salmon and return most of the fish, keeping the odd one for the pot. Small flies are catching most of the fish, Shrimp, Stoats Tail and Cascades are most successful. When the river does rise, larger flies will be used, size 6 or a one inch tube often the most successful in September but only if the river is running at a reasonable height. There are a good number of wintered Salmon and Grilse in the Findhorn Bay at the present time and when water does come, they will enter the river system. So things look good for the future. The banks are in tip top condition as always. McB |
|
Mid May |
|
The river ran high for the most of March and fish ran through to the private beats, however there were a few fish caught, most of which were returned. April saw very low water with fish reluctant to enter the river through the day preferring to run at night. About 16 fish have now been caught with at least 50% returned. Now that we are into May the fish will run through the FAA waters very quickly, providing there is high water. May was never a very productive month, however in recent years it has produced some lovely Spring Salmon. The Association average catch for Spring Salmon is about 20. By the middle of May we should start to see the first of the Grilse appearing so we can expect some fine sport. A new Trust has been formed that will focus on the fish conservation, this trust being known as FNLRFT ( Findhorn Nairn Lossie River Fisheries Trust which is now a member of RAFTS (River and Fisheries Trust for Scotland) and our local members will work closely with the Fisheries Boards and with the Angling Associations. Last year the Grilse were a little later than usual but with good conditions, I am sure that we will enjoy many good days fishing when they do arrive. We are still encouraging members to return all fish over 9 lbs and most anglers are happy to do so. Mcb |
|
Early March 2009 |
| By the beginning of March two lovely Springer s had been caught and returned as recommended by the Association, all Salmon over 9lbs should be returned with each member being allowed to retain one fish until the end of April. It is from the middle of March that things normally improve when high spring tides arrive, called the March Royals. The river has been at a good level for most of the season so far and more kelts have been seen and caught this spring than in the last few years. This is a good sign for the future. Once again we are looking forward to meeting the visitor s who come to fish our lovely river this year. |

February 2009 |
|
A
few Kelts about, one returned in the Red Craig today.(13th),
however, later news received that the FAA has landed AND RETURNED it s first Salmon.
Caught in the Newton pool at 3.00pm today on the fly. Caught by Dave
Rennie. Fish was 34 inches long and estimated around 15-16lbs, fresh but no lice to my knowledge.
We have no pictures yet but some has been taken. A promising start to our season. (Secretary) |

End of Season 2008 |
|
The end of another season and in one way it was the best for many years and in another
way, one of the poorest. The Spring run was excellent with large catches of beautiful Salmon and much larger fish in greater numbers were
caught. A high percentage of these fish were returned. The best of the fishing was on the private beats due to the high river levels which allowed the fish to run straight through the Association water.
However, some nice fish were caught and returned, one lovely fish of 17lbs as an example. The Grilse run was slow to start and when it did arrive, the run was poor, especially on the Association waters. Once again, due to high water levels, the conditions were ideal to allow fish to run. September produced a few fish however they continued to run and not stop in the lower reaches. It was good to see many visitor's once again this year with many landing and returning fish. Overall we have had another enjoyable season and can look forward to next year, with I hope, a good run of large Spring Salmon. Our return policy seems to be paying off. Mcb |

August 2008 |
|
After an excellent spring with twice as many fish caught as is normal by the end of May, hopes were raised for a good grilse run. I am afraid it is now the middle of August and we are still waiting. Small numbers of grilse have been entering the river, with a few falling to the few members who are fishing the Association water. Visitors have been doing fairly well in spite of the poor grilse run and many fish are being returned to the water. A large number of fish have been marked, most likely by seals that are in large numbers at the entrance to Findhorn Bay. The river has been in good condition for fish to run and that is what they are doing and reports from the private beats indicate good catches and a return rate of over 80%.Unfortunately, the grilse are in poor condition once again this year. With regards to the Sea Trout, they are also few in numbers. There is only about 5 weeks of the season left so let us hope for a late run of fish to perk us all up. Mcb |
|
Mid Season 2008 |
|
After an excellent spring and many fish passing through the FAA waters, reports of large fish caught and returned were reported. In spite of the increase in spring Salmon, the FAA catches from Feb until May were only slightly up, this was due to the high water levels with melting snow. This in turn allowed fish to travel through the FAA waters fairly quickly. June have started to produce some nice Grilse and July should see them coming into the river system in large numbers. FAA has the same policy as last year, one Grilse a day and all are encouraged to return large Salmon. Once again FAA members are looking forward to meeting many of the visiting anglers who come to fish this wonderful river of ours, year after year, and to meet many new visitors as well. FAA wish all visitors a very pleasant stay and plenty of thrills on the river. Mcb |

Season 2008 |
|
The start of another season and what a beautiful day it was on the 11th Feb
as the 2008 season opened. A large number of members and visitors attended the official
opening, the river was in good shape but unfortunately no fish were caught. It was on the 25th that the first fish was landed a beautiful deep sea liced Salmon of 14lbs, three days later a 12lb fish was caught, also a 9lb fish on the same day. Many of the members are full of enthusiasm now that fish are being seen, as they try for the first fish of the season. It is good to see the Findhorn off to a good start, we will see many visitors, some for the first time and others returning as they do year after year, it is also good to meet up with old friends again. Last year we had a good response to our returned fish policy. The river banks and roads are in great shape, more seats have been installed thanks to the few folks responsible for the banks maintenance. Things are also very good at the hatchery with plenty of healthy fish stock. We are all looking forward to a good March and April and hope that thing continue as they have started. Mcb |
|
Visitors are reminded they will have to sign a GS declaration before they can fish. |
|
News from September 2007 |
| One visitor caught and released a fish in the 25-30lb plus range, this fish being caught by Dave Champness and was three feet two inches long. |
