Mid Season 2008

After an excellent spring and many fish passing through the FAA waters, reports of large fish caught and returned were reported.  In spite of the increase in spring Salmon, the FAA catches from Feb until May were only slightly up, this was due to the high water levels with melting snow.  This in turn allowed fish to travel through the FAA waters fairly quickly.

June have started to produce some nice Grilse and July should see them coming into the river system in large numbers.

FAA has the same policy as last year, one Grilse a day and all are encouraged to return large Salmon.
Once again FAA members are looking forward to meeting many of the visiting anglers who come to fish this wonderful river of ours, year after year, and to meet many new visitors as well.

FAA wish all visitors a very pleasant stay and plenty of thrills on the river.

Season 2008

The start of another season and what a beautiful day it was on the 11th Feb as the 2008 season opened. A large number of members and visitors attended the official opening, the river was in good shape but unfortunately no fish were caught.

It was on the 25th that the first fish was landed a beautiful deep sea liced Salmon of 14lbs, three days later a 12lb fish was caught, also a 9lb fish on the same day.

Many of the members are full of enthusiasm now that fish are being seen, as they try for the first fish of the season. It is good to see the Findhorn off to a good start, we will see many visitors, some for the first time and others returning as they do year after year, it is also good to meet up with old friends again.

Last year we had a good response to our returned fish policy.  The river banks and roads are in great shape, more seats have been installed thanks to the few folks responsible for the banks maintenance.

Things are also very good at the hatchery with plenty of healthy fish stock. We are all looking forward to a good March and April and hope that thing continue as they have started.

2007 Returns

AGM 2007

The 2007 FAA AGM took place 28th Nov, Forres Academy. The President, Dr David Sneddon welcomed 45 members which was down on last year. A minutes silence was held for Bob Williamson and Sandy McCulloch who had passed away during the season and the night commenced with a fishing poem read out by A.Hutchinson making reference to the Railway pool and the "missing hut".

The President reflected on a poor season with high water throughout the year.   Fish ran straight passed us and only 19 spring fish were taken up to May.   Only 80 spring fish were recorded on the complete Findhorn system which appears to be the worst season since 1952.   Returns were 112 Salmon,269 Grilse and 54 Sea Trout.

Problems with Grilse red vent was noted and 33% of fish caught this season had this problem. There was also the problem of small thin fish again this season.

FAA had a return rate of 37.5% for Salmon, 51.3% for Grilse and 64.8% for Sea Trout. It was also recorded that 163 members caught no fish, 69 retained 1- 5 fish,9 retained 6-10 fish and 2 retained 11-15. No member retained more than 15 fish.   This return rate was very good considering that this figures were for the complete season. A fish of 32 lbs was returned and the President made members aware of the impact to stocks of retaining fish.

GS was discussed and copies of how to protect our waters would be issued with each permit next season.

It was agreed that junior members would be allowed to fish any day of the week if accompanied by an adult but no high bank fishing would be allowed for safety reasons.

Discussion also took place on the proposed flood alleviation scheme proposed for 2009 and to it's affects on FAA.

G.Bell gave a talk to the members on RAFTS and Past Chairman of the River Board, Mr Ewen Brodie gave an interesting talk on Conservation.

The Office bearers were re-elected in block and thanks were given to I.Masson and S.Benzie who completed their term of office this year and stood down.  A.Gammie and K.Ogalvie take their place.

Visitors permits costs remain as last year, Seniors up to £40 and Ordinary up to £85.

The night was completed with the presentation of prizes to competition winners and refreshments were provided by A.McIntosh.

September (already!)

As we draw to the end of the season it has proved to be a mixed one for FAA members.   Some of the beats did very well further upstream but as the wet weather continued,   more and more fish were running through quickly.   Some fish did build up in pools were the river maintained a good level for a few  weeks.   Fish were caught but it was good to see a fair percentage being returned.   During the first two weeks in Sept the water was at summer levels and very few fish entered the river.   On the 17th Sept the water rose once more and fish ran thought our waters again.   One visitor caught and released a fish in the 25-30lb plus range, this fish being caught by Dave Champness and was three feet two inches long.  Other big fish were returned and a few clean fish retained.

I am sure that fish are running late this season and clean fish will continue to run well after the close date of 30th Sept.   This season with high water, did not produce big numbers of fish but this should go well for the stocking policy.  We look forward to 2008.

Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie Fisheries Trust

At the River Findhorn Fishery Board’s Meeting on 10th March 2006 a proposal was tabled to set up a Fisheries Trust involving the Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie rivers. The Trust would be set up under the auspices of RAFTS (River And Fishery Trusts Scotland) and would follow the example of other fishery Trusts such as the Spey, the Ness and Beauly, and the Argyll Trust. The advantage of these Trusts is that they can access funds which would not be available to a River Board.   See www.Riverfindhorn.org.uk News Page for further details.

June 2004

The River Findhorn Salmon Fishery District (Baits and Lures Regulations 2004) became statute with effect 4th June 2004.

In these regulations the following

2(1)  Specifies Organic Bait - period 11 Feb - 30 Sept Annually

3(1)  Specifies Lures - period 1st May - 30 Sept Annually

Note, as we are "In" season these bans are effective from the 4th of June 2004 and will run in the period described in following seasons.

There are still raised concerns about Gyrodactylus salaris.  The Fisheries Research Services, FRS Marine Laboratory Aberdeen have for some time suggested a code of practice to avoid the spread of the disease.  This document produced by SEERAD and DEFRA can be found here.   The River Tweed has already introduced stronger measures to combat the problem.  Their policy can be found here.
